Mandarin SAL Subject
Department of Basic Education on 20 March 2015, document No. 38589, 38590, has the approval of the amendments to the policy document, national policy pertaining to the programme and promotion requirements of the national curriculum statement grades R-12 to provide for the listing of Mandarin Second Aditional Language. A national curriculum statement indicating the minimum outcomes and standards; and a national process and procedures for the assessment of learner achievement are determined and must be achieved.

Curriculum and Assessment Policy Statement Grades 10-12, Mandarin Second Additional Language; is released by the Department of Basic Education, Republic of South Africa.

Curriculum and Assessment

Grade 4-6: two terms of tests, including listening and speaking practice. The learners start to build their oral and literacy skills.

Grade 7: four terms of tests, including listening and speaking practice. Learners continue to strengthen their listening and speaking while developing their reading and writing skills.
Grade 8: four terms of tests, including listening and speaking, reading and reviewing, writing and presenting, and understanding language structures and conventions.
Grade 9: four terms of tests, including listening and speaking, reading and reviewing, writing and presenting, and understanding language structures and conventions. By the time learners are ready to enter Grade 10, they should be able to communicate in their Second Additional Language at both interpersonal and social levels.

Grade 10: four terms of tests, including listening and speaking, reading and reviewing, writing and presenting, and understanding language structures and conventions.
Grade 11: four terms of tests, including listening and speaking, reading and reviewing, writing and presenting, and understanding language structures and conventions.

Grade 12: three terms of tests, a comprehensive understanding of the language. Preparation for the National Senior Certificate exam. As the 7th or 8th (please check student immigration status) subject to the learners who can write in their matriculation exam, learners are prepared under the guidance of the official curriculum/syllabus approved by the authority.

Matric exam: School Base Assessment (SBA); Oral examination and Written Paper I and Written Paper II.
